Math Curriculum

This program is based on the Illustrative Mathematics® IM K-12 Math, which is a problem-based K-12 curriculum. Students learn by doing math, solving problems in mathematical and real-world contexts, and constructing arguments using precise language. You can watch a brief orientation video to take a tour of the curriculum.

Key Lessons
A group of subject matter experts identified a set of key lessons within the IM curriculum that address the major work of the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS). Because adult students have widely varying needs and goals, the curriculum is designed to be flexible. Most key lessons within a unit are linked to related lessons from which instructors can pull activities to build their students’ background knowledge or to dig deeper into a given topic.

Lessons Marked as “Optional”
Additionally, some key lessons are marked as optional and are intended for classes with students who may need more thorough coverage and review of the content or that have not completed a related unit. IM lessons are designed for 45-60-minute class periods. Because many adult education classes are longer than that, instructors are encouraged to bring in activities and exercises from two or more lessons where needed to achieve a pace that will work well for their students’ goals and class structure.
